Daily Handmade Pick---Remembering Hurricane Katrina

Today's pick is special. Five years ago today my hometown and region was forever changed by Hurricane Katrina. I was one of the lucky ones who only had to replace a roof, a fence and some food. We lost work, time, and had the tremendous stress of birthing a child just one month after the storm. But we were lucky.

Some of my friends and family were not so lucky. They lost their homes, their jobs, their friends, and some even their lives. This region is never going to be QUITE the same, but we are strong, brave and a crafty people! From the ruins we will rise, like a black and gold Phoenix....we CAN reNew Orleans.

This piece is from the talented John Doherty. "John learned to work with metal the hard way at Southern Shipbuilding in Slidell, LA as a college student. The first fleur de lis piece was made in response to the devastation inflicted by Hurricane Katrina on John's hometown of Slidell, LA."

John learned at the same shipbuilding plant my own grandfather worked at for many years.  Please check out his lovely shop and if you have a minute at 9:45am on August, 29th, 2010, will you join me in a moment of silence to honor the moment Katrina made landfall on St. Tammany Parish, my home Parish.
